Is your sex live less than you'd like it to be? Do you think the only option for exciting coitus is a seedy motel room with a stranger you met at the porn shop? Are the only folks who have fun sex in Hollywood hanging out with Hugh Hefner, Viagra and Victoria's Secret models?
Not according to Element Community Church, which bills itself as "a place where you can truly feel free to kick the tires of
Christianity, and never be afraid to invite your friends." It is an interdenominational Church with folks from all kinds of backgrounds, said Pastor Jeremiah McDuffie, who is beginning a
sex-ed series next month for folks who are serious about getting their groove on with God's blessing.
"There's many perspectives out there on sexuality and relationships,
but there's also a very Godly perspective," said the 27-year-old McDuffie. "The statistics are crazy, from
people involved in porn to having so many sexual images on the avearge TV show. The whole world is talking about sex and we think the church needs
to put a voice into all that."
McDuffie said there are "great examples" in the Bible of what the sex lives of humans are supposed to look like.
"The Song of Soloman is definiately a good start," he said. "If you read it in modern translation, it is absolutely an erotic love story. But other places in the Bible are also very upfront about how we live our lives. We want to deal with sex in the same way, with up front answers so people won't feel condemned or think their life is in the toilet."
McDuffie knows from where he speaks: He says he there was a time in his life when he was addicted to pornography and "as someone who's been there and done that and nearly had my life destroyed, I can relate to people who might have the issue. There aren't many places you can go where you don't feel you're being condemned to hell for where you are right now."
Element is sending out 35,000 mailers to Tucson homes this week, as well as buying ads in the Arizona Daily Wildcat and the Tucson Weekly - guessing, I suppose, that the demographic the church tries to reach is more likely to read one of those papers rather than the Citizen. If you don't get one of the mailers, but are a believer who'd like to elevate your love-making, here's the basics: First class is Sept. 7, 10:30AM, at Rincon High School. The seminar lasts five weeks. Find out more about it and the church at Element's
homepage.
