Timothy Lucero, 38, died Sept. 4 after being assaulted in the Arizona State Prison Complex in Tucson, a Department of Corrections spokesman said in a news release.
Lucero was assaulted at the prison's Cimarron Unit, 10000 S. Wilmot Road. He died while he was being taken to a local hospital, Nolberto Machiche said.
Lucero, who was admitted to the complex in August 2005, was serving a 6 1/2-year sentence for a marijuana violation and theft as a means of transportation in Maricopa County, his prison records indicate.
Machiche said the investigation is ongoing and he could not say where Lucero was when the assault occurred, who is suspected of assaulting him or what type of injuries he sustained.
