Gimino: Miles' words go long way in wrong direction

A few words of advice for LSU football coach Les Miles: Take a quick course in shutting up.

LSU 45 Arizona 3....Do you think Miles asked Stoops if he "wanted more"?

Dave, what's your point? At the time, Arizona was not a very good team, and oh, yeah, Tuitama went down on the first play via a very questionable hit.

The comparison in the article, is USC vs. LSU, and I think USC wins. The comparison is SEC vs. Pac-10, and I think if we shuffle the conferences, we'd have USC, LSU, Cal, 'Bama, two more SEC teams, then everyone else, with Stanford on the bottom with Mississippi State one notch up.

My point is that Mr. Gimino's article is full of half truths. He mentions the 52-9 win by Oklahoma over Oklahoma St. but he doesn't mention that Miles went 2-2 against the Sooners with less talent. He mentions the Pac-Ten's 8-6 edge over the SEC this decade without mentioning that USC has 4 of the wins or that the SEC leads the Pac-Ten 65-40-7 all-time.Life as we know it didn't start in the year 2000.Or was the Pac-Ten so bad in the 1990's that their fans would rather start counting in this decade?
Mr Gimino makes reference to weaker SEC teams such as Mississippi and Mississippi St. but ignores the fact that both of them have won bowl games more recently than Washington,Stanford,or Arizona.I saw Arizona in Baton Rouge last year and they were far inferior to Mississippi(whom we had to beat in OT) and don't give me this,"At the time, Arizona was not a very good team" because the Wildcats had just beaten BYU the week before and boasted after that game that they would be "ready for LSU." Arizona was up and down all year....they didn't become better as the year went on like your statement implies.
Note: Tuitama played the whole first half against LSU and sat out the 2nd half after the game was out of reach.

Hey Dave E.
Hear this from Dav-y:
Regarding your statement about Arizona's football team:
"they didn't become better as the year went on"
A big, flying "BULLFLOP" to that!
The Arizona team that lost so badly in Baton Rouge rebounded to beat Cal and Oregon in November.
The youngsters of UA's 2006 team improved greatly throughout the season!
See, I actually WATCHED all the games!~
Happy 4th, all!

Les Miles coached Oklahoma State from
2001 through 2004. His Cowboys in 2001
went 4-7 and 5th in the Big 12 South.

In 2002 his Cowboys finished 8-5 and
4th in the Big 12 South.

In 2003 his Cowboys were 9-4 and 3rd
in the Big 12 South.

In 2004 his Cowboys backslid to 7-5
and 5th in the Big 12 South.

In his 4 year stint at OSU, Miles never
beat Texas, he was 2-2 versus Oklahoma,
Texas Tech and Texas A&M; 1-1 versus
Kansas State, Nebraska, Colorado and
oh by the way 1-1 in the Cowboys home
and away series vs. UCLA.

Not bad...but not really exceptional either being that his Cowboys went
1-2 in their bowl game appearances
that includes a 31-28 loss to
Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl
during his best season at OSU.

Miles took over Coach Saban's LSU
Tigers in 2005 and went 11-2.
But just like Les Miles failed to
conquer the Big 12 South elite,
his Tiger's have yet to tame the
SEC's best.

In 2005 the Miles led Tigers lost
to Tennessee, and to Georgia in
the SEC Championship Game.

Last year Miles' Tigers lost to
Auburn in a closely contested
battle and decisively to the
National Champs Florida.

We'll find out a lot more about
Coach Miles this season.

We here in the Pac 10 Conference
witnessed Pete Carroll take USC's
floundering football program to
National Championships.

Concerning Coach Mike Stoops, he could
have remained at Oklahoma and helped
his brother Bob win more National
Championships or chose an easier
and more stable NCAA Division I
Football program to head coach.

Instead Coach Stoops chose Arizona,
knowing the program was in turmoil
due to neglected recruiting and
apathetic, unmotivated mutinous
kids who felt alienated from
their aloof head coach.

How many head or assistant coaches
would be eager to take on a project
in the condition the UofA was in?

Coach Stoops has the UofA headed in
the right direction which will be a
winning season and bowl game this
year, and eventual Pac 10 and
National Championships.

Oh, and by the way Coach Miles,
I got a strong feeling that in
the very near future, in a
Championship game, you'll see
Arizona Head Coach Mike Stoops
again on the opposite sideline
late in the game with his
"spread arms, palms up."

Hey Dav-Y,

In the Wildcats' last game they lost by two TD's to ASU. So they went from losing by 17 to USC in September to losing to a far inferior ASU team by 14 in November and you're trying to tell me that they improved during the year? I don't think so.I know they beat Cal late but they also beat BYU the week prior to the LSU game so that's a wash.
This whole argument is circular and could go on forever but I know I speak for a lot of SEC fans when I say we're tired of having to defend ourselves to writers and fans of the Pac-Ten.If it isn't John Canzano then it's Ted Miller. If it isn't Pat Forde then it's Ivan Maisel. If it isn't our OOC schedules then we get kicked around because not enough of our teams travel out west to play in Pac-Ten country.....as if we owe you anything.
I'm sorry Les Miles ruffled your feathers but in his last three games as a head coach vs. the Pac-Ten he's 3-0 against your league. All the man can do is go by what he's seen on the field.

Until Arizona starts to win some games against decent competition outside of the pac-10, we have nothing to crow about. Then again, I believe the SEC is overrated. More Pac-10 players in the NFL than any other league...

The author of the article itself admits that the SEC is the best conference. The thing that he fails to mention is that the Pac 10 Co-Champion (California) lost to a 9-4 SEC team at Tennessee and was totally dominated. USC is 65-12 since Pete Carroll took over and is considered a "dominant" team. Georgia is 61-17 in the same time frame, but is merely considered a "solid" SEC team. That tells me that the SEC is much more difficult to navigate than the Pac 10. And also that USC would not have had as much success had they played in the SEC. Its easy to get "up" for 1 or 2 games per year then take a month off and get ready for one last toughy (the bowl game), but in the SEC, it is so much more of a mental game....playing Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, LSU, Alabama all one right after the other.

Hey trust me, I would sleep MUCH easier at night if my Georgia Bulldogs could play in the Pac 10. It would be guarenteed they would go 11-1 at the least nearly every year.

A good measurement of how good a conference is check the bowl results. The last two years in all the conference bowl games I would say the SEC is above average at best. Pac 10 has done about the same. SEC's non conference schedule these past few years has been pathetic. And yes, Arizona has been bad, 16 points a game on offense in college football is horrible. Who wants to watch that. This year we have hope with a new offensive scheme. Georgia, you do real well against teams that can score, how bout that 2005 West Virginia team?????

Dave E. you make a really strong argument that last statement, you really do. Three years ago LSU beat a clearly inferior Oregon St. 22-21 in OT. They really bullied them there. Then 2 years ago, it was LSU "demolishing" ASU 35-31 in the biggest gift of a victory I've ever seen. Then came the drubbing last year, which is always a little easier when you can "sweep the leg Johnny" (a la Karate Kid fame), and take out the starting QB. I am not going to sit here though and say the Pac is better, because it isn't. But it isn't the talent at the top. The SEC has better depth across the board than the Pac year in and year out, however, every year the Pac puts up teams every bit as good as the SEC. And before the SEC and Co. start tooting their own horns, feel free to add that extra conference game instead of beating up on the Citadel or North-northwest Idaho College every year. The only way the SEC is going to fully get the respect that they deserve it to play at least 11 game schedules (i.e., substitute 1 more softy for a reasonable team) and quit the whining about "the conference". The teams should win those tougher games anyway because they are the best of the best, right?

Actually, the SEC was the best conference in college football, based on bowl records (6-3). The Pac-10 was in the middle of the pack at 3-3.

I have to agree with Dave. Arizona was crushed by LSU, the game was essentially over after Arizona's first series of downs. Yes the early hit on Tuitama was nasty but that is football. The game was hard to watch and in the end it was embarrassing as well. If Arizona represented the PAC-10 at all during that game then maybe the LSU coach has a point.

I for one am tired of being frustrated by watching an inept and unfocused Arizona football team playing good one week then totally collapsing the next, and I long for the days when Arizona could consistantly stand toe to toe with teams like Miami, Nebraska, and USC.

My patience has just about run out on embarrassing losses for Arizona football on the national stage, as well as the Mike Stoops ranting and raving on-the-job training program.

So, Dave, you are a fan of the SEC....great.

I think I'll remain an Arizona fan, thank you.

As far as half-truths, you match up well with Gimino to make your points. Yeah, Tuitama 'played' the whole first half, much of which he did not remember. Mississippi and Mississippi St. winning bowl games 'more recently' than Washington,Stanford,or Arizona, means nothing. And, Arizona's improvement over the year came at every position except QB, proven by the fact that of having an offensive lineman selected AA as a freshman.

The SEC is a terrific conference. I just happen to like Arizona. Talk trash in another venue.

Sorry folks, the SEC top-to-bottom is a far better conference day in and day out than the PAC-10. As much of a fan of the PAC as I am, lets be realistic.

Yes, USC beat Auburn and Arkansas in different years, think of now playing these teams every week.

For those of you not happy with Stoops and his direction, go watch Erickson and become ASU fans. Stoops has the team showing up and competing every week... If they can average 20+points per game this season, with this defense.. Should be a great year.

OK Eric M.,

For starters, when LSU beat Oregon St.in 2004 it was the SEC's 4th best team against the Pac-Ten's 3rd or 4th best team that year(OSU finished tied for 3rd place in the Pac-Ten in '04).Thought you might want to know that.
When we supposedly lucked out in 2005 against ASU well.....all I can say is that the Sun Devils should've worked on their special teams in that week where they had a game to warm up against Temple(And you make fun of our OOC schedules?) while our players were up all night helping refugees from New Orleans who'd been sabatoged by Katrina.

You've touched upon another sensitive topic. The SEC's OOC schedules against teams such as "the Citadel or NW Idaho College". In the last four seasons SEC teams have beaten Ohio St.,Virginia,Virginia Tech,Oklahoma,Texas,Texas A&M,Nebraska,California,Iowa,Florida St.,Miami,Clemson,Georgia Tech,Wake Forest,Notre Dame,Wisconsin,Indiana,Oregon St.,Washington St.,Boise St.,Hawaii,Fresno St.,Southern Miss, and others. We have NOTHING to prove to you about our scheduling.
We've won more bowl games than any other conference this decade,we've got more wins against teams that have finished ranked than any other conference this decade, and we have had more teams that finished ranked than any other league this decade.
Leave us alone!

Gimino, perhaps you should try telling the entire story, and do a little research.

This is nothing different that any other aspect of the sports information feeding frenzie that writers like Gimino use to do their job. But so often, the story is incomplete because reporters are too lazy to even check their details on the internet.

Ray...

I have done the research. That's why I say the SEC is the best conference (not that we need a lot of research to figure that out).

My problem with Miles' comments is centered on his sarcastic dismissal of the Pac-10 and USC's supposed easier path.

There isn't much difference between the teams' schedules this year, and, overall, his comments were ignorant, especially with his team not playing Tennessee or Georgia this season and LSU having probably its five toughest games at home.

good job anthony gimino. you hit the nail on the with this article. les miles is writing checks with his mouth that his @$$ cant cash. we all know that the SEC is the best conference. but we all also know that if you took away the ARDOUS schedule of LSU and placed USC first on their schedule, USC would mop the floor with them.

And by the way, on ranking toughest schedules. i saw one estimate that had USC with the 8th toughest schedule and LSU with the 17th. les miles is trying to hide behind his tough conference. it isnt tough if you dont play the tough teams in the conference like anthony gimino said.

If you take the top SEC teams from last year look at who they lost to in bowl games---Arkansas and Tennessee lost to the third and fourth place teams from the Big Ten and the year before the Sec Champ lost to the Big East Champ. Maybe top to bottom a little better but the SEC is over-rated every year----LSU's non conference last year was Louisiana Lafayette, Tulane, Fresno State and Arizona. Where's the Big 10 or ACC or Big East??? Didn't Arkansas win the SEC West and USC spanked them hard. Isn't Pete C. 4-0 versus SEC since he has been at USC. Facts don't lie. SEC is over-rated. No way more than 1 team should be in the top 8 teams in the country. I'll take the top 3 Pac 10 teams over the top 3 SEC teams from last year easy.
