EatingWell magazine has recognized Tucson's Santa Cruz River Farmers' Market as one of "America's Top 10 Farmers' Markets."

The magazine asked its 1.6 million readers to pick their local favorites from the current estimate of 4,385 such markets in the U.S., then had contributing editors and farmers' market aficionados Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough (authors of "The Ultimate Cook Book") visit and write about readers' Top 10.

To be eligible, markets had to offer food produced locally, sold directly and cultivated in an environmentally conscious way.

At the Santa Cruz River Farmers' Market, both summertime selections, such as peaches and apricots, and autumn assortments, such as corn and pumpkins, fit the bill.

The Santa Cruz River Farmers' Market is open 4 to 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Santa Cruz River Park. It sets up on North Riverside Avenue, just west of Interstate 10, between St. Mary's Road and Speedway Boulevard.

The farmers market, operated by the Community Food Bank, started in August 2005 and accepts food stamps, WIC farmers market vouchers, cash and credit cards.

The July/August of "EatingWell" is on newsstands.

It is open 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

So long . . .

California barista to represent U.S.

Heather Perry of Coffee Klatch Roasting in San Dimas, Calif., will represent the United States in the World Barista Championship later this month in Tokyo.

In May, Perry won the United States Barista Championship held in Minneapolis, according to sponsor Specialty Coffee Association of America.

The world championship is July 31-Aug. 2 and is sponsored by the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan.

In the U.S. competition, each barista was given 15 minutes to prepare and serve 12 coffee beverages.

The only Arizona competitor, Steve Kelly of Ground Control in Goodyear, was disqualified. According to the SCAA Web site, disqualifications are made when a barista exceeds 16 minutes, or one minute more than the allotted time.

Kelly was the only competitor disqualified.
