UA has partnered with Apple Inc. to launch UA on iTunes U, a central access point for finding and watching UA-related podcasts, said Stuart Glogoff, senior consultant at the UA Learning Technologies Center.
UA's action follows Apple partnerships with Stanford University, Harvard College and the University of California at Berkeley.
According to Apple.com, more than half of the nation's top 500 schools use iTunes U to distribute their digital content.
UA on iTunes U offers videos of courses, faculty lectures, recorded events and other prerecorded programming that relates to UA, he said.
"The beauty to UA is, we will be in one central location that will be easy for people to browse around for any podcasts done by us," he said.
Available programming includes a series explaining how the financial aid process works, he said.
Apple offers the podcast site free to UA, and there is no fee for participants, he said.
"In fact there is a big savings for any institution," he said. "We have some large files, and we won't have to host them on our own servers."
After a lecture or event is videotaped, it must be edited and digitized into a format that works for podcasting, Glogoff said. The file is uploaded to iTune U and is then available for public viewing.
Glogoff said he looks for podcasting activity on UA on iTunes U to grow rapidly, and eventually include information from a wide variety of UA areas, including sports.
Glogoff likened podcasts to getting information through a magazine subscription. After you sign up for a free subscription on a specific topic, additional issues are sent to your computer as they become available.
