Ramman wrote:The biggest problem I had running the newspaper was money. It was actually foolish, business wise that is, for me to buy the paper the way I did. I was under-capitalized to start with and the paper was essentially bankrupt when I took over. The decision was based more on idealism than business so I was off on the wrong foot to begin with.

The political atmosphere where I was added to the problem. At the time I bought, (along with two partners,) there was a very serious and sometimes violent recall election going on. Our paper took the side of truth, which was not very popular. Almost every one of the regular advertisers were approached and warned not to advertise with us. A few refused to comply because they believed in what we were doing, but they were not enough to keep us going. We were a conservative newspaper, one that tried very hard to publish actual unbiased and true news stories, as well as sound conservative opinion. We also promoted opposing opinions to counter our own.

Like it or not, advertising dollars is what keeps newspapers going. There are some newspapers who will listen when, on the rare occasion, an advertiser wants you to slant news a certain way, or publish an article contrary to your morals and/or policies. This does not actually happen very often, at least in my experience. I never sold out, losing those few dollars rather than compromise my integrity.

Most of the mainstream newspapers are quite liberal to begin with, so siding with the left in politics was not a problem. I doubt papers such as the New York Times was paid by any business to cover the election as they did, completely one sided, supporting lies about Obama while promoting lies against McCain even when they knew they were lies. If it was a payoff by some corporate interest, it was a lousy decision as they are losing more than they could have earned as a result.

The Washington Post took the same tact as did the New York Times. Even their ombudsman wrote about the one sided and very slanted coverage that has cost the paper a ton in advertising dollars and subscribers. These papers, and many like them, chose to side with political correctness rather than taking an objective view and reporting genuine news concerning the election. Some even admitted they lied, supported lies, and even held back news in order to sway election results. (Think the Los Angeles Times and the San Fransisco Chronicle as major examples.)

Again, if they were paid by some corporation to cover the election in this manner, it was a lousy decision. They are all losing more than they could have gained.

No honest business would ever consider manipulating the news in this manner. They would also have too much to lose. Even AIG is starting to lose business as a result of taking all the bailout money they have. Some people taking their business elsewhere are doing so out of protest while others are just too afraid the business will go under, taking their money with them.

Overall though, advertising dollars rarely have any affect on the news coverage other than providing funds for the papers to operate. If a paper is lucky enough, circulation will barely cover basic operating expenses. The newsrooms and profits all come from advertising dollars. Most readers are smart enough to see when a newspaper has become a paid shill for some corporation or politician.

The NY times might be liberal with regard to special interest politics. But not the economy. If they were then they would have been heavily critical of both candidates. retaining Wall Street insiders such as Robert Rubin (Obama's) & Phil Gramm (John McCain). Both of these guys pushed through/supported legislation which allowed for/ enabled fraud & rapant speculation which has damged the economy.

QuoteRamman, I am with you...however, among those "opportunities" I would like to see Hispanics taking "responsibility" for their actions, lives, and living under the law,...

Taking responsibility for actions is not just a Hispanic thing, but it is the solution for many of the ills our country is suffering from.

But your point as stated is well taken. I do have to qualify the fact that from my own observations and relations with legal Hispanics that most of these people, especially of the older generations, are very responsible people. They either came here legally or they have been here through several generations. They hold up lawfulness and are very moral people.

It is those who came here illegally and those who were indoctrinated by liberal teachings that have abandoned their families and principles to the concepts of victimhood and nanny state care that are the real problem. However they are not alone, and singling out one race or another as being solely responsible would be to ignore the larger problems.

This whole idea of the nanny state is the underlying problem, and it has effected every race. It is morally reprehensible and destroys personal responsibility, ambition, invention, entrepreneurship and success through personal achievement. If we allow the government to take over our lives, dictating what we can and cannot do as far as managing our lives and making our own choices, we destroy everything that makes us who we are. The trade off of personal responsibility for Government care is not worth the price we would have to pay.

God gave us the gift of free will. It is among His greatest gifts to mankind. We are to use this gift responsibly. Handing it over to someone else is not the responsible choice.
