A 15-month improvement project for the Houghton and Sahuarita roads intersection on the far Southeast Side is to begin Monday.

Crews for the Ashton Construction Co., contracted by Pima County, will build the $4.5 million project.

Work will include replacing stop signs with traffic signals, removing an existing median, adding dual left turn and through lanes plus new westbound and southbound turn lanes and installing major drainage improvements, bicycle lanes, pedestrian access ramps and electronic crosswalks.

The project will extend about 1,500 feet out each way from the intersection.

The project is receiving $2.5 million from the Regional Transportation Authority and $2 million from development impact fees.
