Radioactive water: Nuke operators promise to closely monitor leaks
It's normal for some radioactive material to leak into groundwater under a power plant, the nuclear industry says. Such contaminated water has been found in several places across the country, including the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Facility west of Phoenix. Leaks in Illinois have prompted the industry to take action. Plant operators have promised to closely monitor leaks. In some cases - though apparently not in Arizona - radioactive contamination has migrated off-site.
Touch-screens challenged: Group to sue over machines for disabled voters
A lawsuit expected today in Maricopa County aims to challenge the security and reliability of electronic voting systems being acquired by most Arizona counties.
Voter Action, a Berkeley, Calif.-based not-for-profit, said the suit would also contend the machines don't accommodate the needs of voters with a broad range of disabilities.
Diebold Election Systems and Sequoia electronic voting machines are two of three systems available to counties complying with a federal law requiring that the disabled be able to vote without assistance. Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer expressed confidence in the reliability and security of the machines.
