Families come in all colors and sizes.

Some are headed by single parents. Others are multiracial, adoptive or headed by gay or lesbian parents. Some families live with mental or physical disabilities or face chronic illness or death.

The Tucson Children's Museum offers a unique opportunity for families to visit a traveling exhibit, "In Our Family: A Family Diversity Project" that explores portraits of diverse families.

On display is a photo-text exhibit featuring families who face difficulties because they do not have the appearance of a "normal" family.

According to Tad Beckwith, director of exhibits and programs at the museum, the exhibit is an eye-opening experience for visitors. He said we all can relate to these families because, although they are different, they have obstacles to overcome just like everyone else.

"You get to see families with different backgrounds in difficult situations," Beckwith said. "We hope it starts conversations and interactions inside our community."

One example is a lesbian couple who took seven foster children into their home. Karen and Beth Bellevance-Grace are quoted as saying they make it their goal to help children who need it most.

"We have calls for dozens of children who need placement," Beth Bellevance-Grace wrote. "It's always hard to say 'no' when you know there's a child who could blossom in your house."

The goal of the Amherst, Mass.-based Family Diversity Project, according to its Web site, is to help "people of all ages recognize, support and celebrate the full range of diversity . . . our traveling exhibits are designed to help reduce prejudice, stereotyping, and harassment of all people who are perceived to be 'different' from the 'norm.' "

The Tucson Children's Museum received a $225,000 grant from the Marguerite Casey Foundation. Beckwith said the grant was crucial in bringing the "In Our Family" exhibit to Tucson.

"Tucson is such a diverse place that we wanted to share these experiences with the public," he said. "We have on display a number of exhibits celebrating this."

The exhibit features families from across the country and has been on display in schools, museums and libraries across the United States. It will be on display in Tucson through Aug. 31.

Which "sick crap" are you referring to? The families pictured in the exhibit? Have you seen the exhibit and the pictures?

Diversity is a clever word, used to justify almost anything these days. Let's glorify all this sick crap in the name of "diversity".
