Re: Memphis hiring Josh Pastner as assistant

Josh will benefit immensely from seeing how another program does it. And Memphis is a nice place to live.

RICHARD F.

Don't leave Josh! What other reason will I have for going to the games now?! (Good Luck in Memphis!) When you return as head coach, I'll return for season tickets!

F.M.

See you on TV during the Final Four next year! You will reach your goal quicker at Memphis than at the UA.

HOBBS H.

Josh should be the head coach of UA basketball someday. He should get some head coaching experience somewhere soon so that when the job opens in a few years he can fight for it.

DAVE K.

I'm sorry, but the one that should be leaving is LUTE.

Arizona sophomore basketball player Nic Wise said it will be about midsummer before he decides if he will return to the team.

The guard said Monday he's still "50-50'' on his decision. Wise said he'll get with his family this weekend to talk about his situation and future.

Wise said that assistant coach Josh Pastner's leaving for the University of Memphis won't affect his decision.

"There's just a lot of stuff,'' Wise said. "I really don't know about the decision.''

Wise spent part of his afternoon shooting baskets at McKale Center. He said he didn't even know a possible destination if he chose to leave.

Pennell signed

It was a busy first day for new UA assistant basketball coach Russ Pennell.

He introduced himself to McKale Center personnel and visited with UA recruit Abdul Gaddy's parents.

Pennell, 47, said he'd commute from the Phoenix area for his job and move to Tucson when daughters Morgan, 12, and Emily, 8, are out of school in three weeks. His wife is Julie.

Pennell spent the weekend in Tucson watching the Cactus Classic at UA.

"It was a chance to watch future players and see what's been done (in recruiting) prior to me getting here,'' he said. "(Now) it's about me getting acclimated.''

He will make $150,000 a year.

Geary up next?

The Arizona men's basketball coaching staff could be complete soon, depending on when Memphis makes its final approval on the hiring of Pastner.

Russ Pennell is signed and Denver Nuggets assistant Mike Dunlap said he's set to take the associate head coaching position for UA.

John Perrin, UA's senior associate director for athletics for business affairs, said UA's job posting dated April 25 is good for the current openings and eventually for all of them.

"That helps with the (total) pool of coaching (candidates)," Perrin said.

My educated guess is that the new assistant will be former UA player Reggie Geary. He was on Olson's staff for three years before and knows the school.

UA can hire Dunlap because there is an opening after Miles Simon was told his contract was not going to be renewed and his job duties have been moved within the athletic department. Simon's contract with UA ends in late June.

Strug to enter Hall

Tucsonan Kerri Strug will be inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Presented by Allstate on June 19 in Chicago.

Strug's valiant landing on her second vault despite an injured ankle produced one of the lasting memories of the 1996 Olympic Games. Her vault secured the U.S. team's gold medal.

T.O. to try acting

IRVING, Texas - Get your popcorn ready: Terrell Owens is coming to prime time Wednesday night. As an actor.

T.O. will make his sitcom acting debut on the MyNetworkTV show "Under One Roof" as the long-lost brother of the show's star, Flavor Flav. Owens tries convincing Flav and sitcom sibling Kelly Perine that they're all brothers in hopes of getting them to invest in his Web site.

"I see dollar signs," Owens said. "I'm trying to kind of smooth my way into the family, but Flav is not buying it. It's a lot of funny dialogue. It was a good time.

"It might also be a first step toward a second career."

The only one loosing from all this is Nick. He showed he could play last year (providing he followed all his coaches training, weight loss, etc) and now he's alienating his biggest supporter, US! He'll loose a year of playing not to mention even MORE NBA grooming under Dunlap and Pennell. Make up your mind and either come back committed or pack your bags and find a good trainer to keep an eye on you! ~Cactus Pete

Nic DON'T GO - you were and will be a star here. Look at all the PT you got last year. You should have a huge advantage on any recruit comming in and there will be enough PT for you and Jennings on a team with only one established big man.

Nic, have you no loyalty? I guess I'm old school when the opportunity to attend (let alone play) college ball was an honor! I presume the younger generation takes too much for granted. I'd really hate to see you go but the master all ways makes his teams the best they can be. Can you really afford to miss out on that? Think long and hard about this career altering decision.
