Dick Dale: The 76-year-old King of the Surf Guitar returns to Tucson, Stratocaster in hand, for a show at City Limits, 6350 E. Tanque Verde Road, tonight. His trademark percussive playing style will, as usual, be coupled with his Spinal Tap-ian penchant for putting his amp on 11.

Del Castillo opens the $15 show after doors open at 8. Call the club at 733-6262 for more details.

RTX: Neil Michael Hagerty has been busy with multiple projects since the dissolution of Royal Trux a few years back. Find out what the other half of that lo-fi duo, Jennifer Herrema, has been musically up to when she and her new band, RTX, play Plush, 340 E. Sixth Street, tonight. Touring on "Transmaniacon," an exploration of how low-end glam rock can really go, RTX will start around 11:30. Admission is $9. Call 798-1298 or visit plushtucson.com for any additional needs.

saturday

David Allan Coe: Think you're an outlaw, Mr. Toby Keith? You got nothin' on David Allan Coe. The country singer has done way more than irk the leftward-leaning. He's done time, hard time, including a good number of years at the Ohio State Penitentiary, from which he was released in the late 1960s. This set him up nicely as a founding father of outlaw country. He also knew a thing or two about showmanship, and his unpredictable antics - like riding a boomin' Harley onstage - made for lively performances that didn't necessarily endear him to Nashville proper.

To check out the man who penned "Take This Job and Shove It," here's what you do: Head to Game Day Sports Bar, 3727 S. Palo Verde Road, Dec. 11. He's performing amid a motorcycle show; doors open at noon, and Coe performs at 4 p.m. Tickets are $15, but $22 for "gold seating" and are available at Zia Records. Call 745-5181.

Blues, Bebop and Beyond: This jazz event presented by the Arizona Jazz Academy features a concert by Malik Alkabir, Doug Tidaback, Mike Kuhn and Tony Frank. It will also feature five Arizona Jazz Academy combos. The music kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at The MUSE Community Arts Center, 516 N. Fifth Ave. A $10 donation at the door is requested. Call 792-0160.

sunday

Gary Hoey: Just a few days after his buddy Dick Dale plays at City Limits, 6350 E. Tanque Verde Road, Gary Hoey steps onto that same stage. Though Hoey is much younger than Dale, they share a lot in common. Besides collaborating on a remake of "Miserlou" ("Miserlou '97"), both men have continued to do what they do - tour as instrumental guitarists - regardless of mainstream trends. In August, Hoey released a "Best of Gary Hoey," so we expect a set that culls from his entire career.

Hoey performs Dec. 12; doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $13 in advance, or you can plunk down an extra $2 day of show. Ticketmaster (321-1000, ticketmaster.com) will gladly take your money.

A Tribute to George Harrison: Govinda's will celebrate the fourth memorial service for ex-Beatle George Harrison. The service will include tribute band The Mystery Tour, playing Fab Four songs. There will be a sharing of personal recollections of Harrison, and participants may offer candles and flowers to an honorary shrine to the musician. A feast will follow. Event begins at 5 p.m. at Govinda's Natural Foods Buffet, 711 E. Blacklidge Drive. The $3 admission includes dinner. Call 792-0630.

KUAT for the holidays: Are you the type to want to sing along, at the top of your lungs, whenever you hear Handel's "The Messiah"? Yes? Read on.

Dec. 12, KUAT (89.7 and 90.1 FM) presents the Tucson Symphony Orchestra performing "The Messiah" at 3 p.m., so you can belt it all out in the privacy of your own home. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Ha-leh-eh-lu-oo-jah!

KUAT, in fact, is programming holiday specials throughout the month. For a complete schedule, visit kuatfm.org online.

Ozomatli: The Grammy-award winning, alt-Latin band might as well buy a house here. If memory serves us correctly, the group has played in the Old Pueblo at least three times this year. Not that we mind. We love Ozo's mish-mash of Latin, hip-hop and Middle Eastern influences, which is on fine display on their latest CD, "Street Signs." The disc includes collaborations with the Prague Orchestra, French gypsy-klezmer group Les Yeux Noirs and salsa legend Eddie Palmieri.

You can check out Ozo at City Limits, 6350 E. Tanque Verde Road, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25. For more information, call 733-6262.
