Best bargains: free music, dance, comedy

Everybody's looking for a great bargain during the holiday shopping season. But what about tracking down a li'l somethin' - somethin' for yourself?

The Blue Light Special of the Fourth Avenue Street Fair doesn't have anything to do with Kokopelli earrings or terra cotta pots, but it does have a whole lot to do with local culture in the form of music, dance and comedy. Performances, which occur all three days of the fair - tomorrow through Sunday - offer variety, and all are F to the R to the double E.

All are by locals, from Tucson High's Jovert Steel Drum Band to the a cappella crooning to the oldies of Catacoustic Groove; popular rock band Nowhere Man to the most fabulous AARP-card carriers, the Sophisticated Dancers; the talented students of the Arizona Jazz Academy to the blues of favorite Nancy McCallion.

So as you wander with your Tri Tip beef sandwich and fresh-squeezed lemonade, trying to balance the shopping bags, take a breather at these locations:

  • Winsett Outdoor Performance Center, 316 N. Fourth Ave.
  • North Stage, East Fifth Street and North Hoff Avenue
  • FAMA Main Stage, East Seventh Street and North Hoff Avenue

Hours for the 34th annual Winter Street Fair are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. In addition, some 400 vendors will have their wares - jewelry, pottery, clothing, paintings and much more - intermingled with booths offering a wide variety of eats.

For more information, call 624-5004 or go online to www.fourthavenue.org.

Here's ho-ho-hoping you have a great time.
