Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - 'Artistry & Veterinary Medicine Show'

This exhibit features animal art in a variety of media by veterinarian, student veterinarian artists and veterinary technician artists from throughout Arizona and the United States. A portion of sales to benefit Clinical Valley Fever Research, a devastating fungal disease that affects both animals and humans, primarily in arid regions of the southwestern United States, northern Mexico with a concentration of United States cases in Arizona and California. An opening reception is slated for 4:30-6 p.m. Nov. 12 (reservations required). The opening coincides with Valley Fever Awareness Week in Arizona. Show runs Mondays-Fridays until Jan. 20 at the Northern Trust Bank.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - Business Plan Development

'Counselors to America's Small Business.' SCORE Chapter 689 will give local entrepreneurs the opportunity to get answers to their business plan questions with this two-part workshop. Part one will be held Jan. 8 with part two on Jan. 15.
Speakers will cover a range of topics, including introduction to business plan basics, the 'why' for writing a business plan and the step-by-step building of a personalized business plan.  Those registering
for both sessions with prepayment will receive a free copy of Ultimate Business Plan Software, a $$100 value.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - Karl Blossfeldt: Nature’s Magic Garden

This photographer, sculptor, teacher and artist (1865-1932) is best known for his detailed photogravures of optically magnified plants and flowers published in two famous texts, Urformen der Kunst (Forms in Art) (1928) and Wundergarten der Natur (Magic Garden of Nature) (1932). He devoted his career to making photographic enlargements of simple details in order to reveal the fundamental structures of the plant world, creating deceptively simple images that bridged the realms of aesthetics and science. An exhibit of his works will be on view through Jan. 28. A reception will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 7. Gallery hours are 8:30-4:30 p.m. daily.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - Baby Boot Camp @ Udall Park

This stroller-based fitness classes are designed specifically to help moms get fit. Classes combine strength-training exercises with cardiovascular drills. Pilates, yoga and abdominal exercises help improve core strength. The stroller, resistance tubes (and even your child!) are used as an integral part of the workout.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - “Paginas de la historia de México'

The University of Arizona Libraries has extended the run of its newest exhibition, “Paginas de la historia de México: Excerpts from the Morales de Escárcega Collection” through Jan. 31. The exhibit features select archival materials–letters, maps, and government documents–that uniquely chronicle the history of Mexico from the colonial period to the 20^th century. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays-Fridays.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - 'LS30' Exhibit

In 1978, Line and Space, LLC began designing and building innovative and ecologically sound architecture. The work of founder Les Wallach and principals Henry Tom, Bob Clements and Johnny Birkinbine has received more than 70 architectural design awards. 'LS30' will display the work of the firm’s 30 years of award winning, environmentally responsive architecture. Show runs through Feb. 27.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - “All Together Now” Exhibit

A collection of Tucson’s favorite locales such as the Red Room, 4th Avenue and 6th Avenue underpasses, Himmel Park and the downtown barrio by painter Shana M. Zimmerman are on view through Feb. 14. Also included are portraits of local bands such as the Fashionistas and Marianne Dissard and of the late Chris Gaffney, of the Hacienda Brothers. Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - Fernando Gallego and His Workshop: The Altarpiece from Ciudad Rodrigo

This exquisite group of Spanish medieval panel paintings, from the altarpiece of Ciudad Rodrigo, has undergone ultraviolet light and x-ray examination as well as infrared reflectography at the Kimbell Art Museum's Conservation Studio in Fort Worth. The resulting scientific and art historical research has unlocked 500-year-old secrets about the altarpiece's creation and realization all explored in this uniquely comprehensive exhibition. Show runs through March 22.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - Rosemont Copper Tours

Rosemont Copper hosts tours of the site weekly. Each tour runs from 9 a.m.-noon and are limited to 10 people. Directions will be given when making a reservation. Tours provide a brief overview of the project and include visits to the geology exploration camp, the historic mining areas, the old quarry, the weather station and the future pit location. Learn why Rosemont’s plans for reclamation, re-vegetation and water conservation will make this project a world-class facility.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - Art Chair Contest for Teens

Arts for All, Inc. announces an art chair contest for youth under 18 years of age. This contest, “Sweet Chair-ity,” is the signature fundraising event for Arts for All, a nonprofit organization. The deadline to drop off the chairs to Arts for All is February 1, 2009. Place name, age, address and telephone number taped to the back or under the seat of the chair. A picture of the artist working on the chair is encouraged. The winner will be contacted by February 14, 2009. The winning chair will be auctioned on March 21, 2009 at the Manning House. This year, the winner will be given two tickets ($$200 value) to attend the event, will be featured in the event’s program, and be introduced during the event. Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - Ritual Beauty: Art of the Ancient Americas

Ritual Beauty: Art of the Ancient Americas, The I. Michael Kasser Collection. This exhibition, guest-curated by Joanne Stuhr, highlights the aesthetic worlds of Mesoamerica and the Andean region prior to European contact. The works are a creative reflection of the ideals, worldview, cosmology and practical needs of these ancient peoples. Featured are ceramic effigy vessels, textiles and adornments, clay figures, stone sculptures and tools fashioned from copper, silver and gold. Show runs Dec. 4-Feb. 8. Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - Project Turn-Around Mentor Training

The Educational Enrichment Foundation (EEF) is looking for a few good men and women to become Middle School mentors!  EEF’s Project Turn-Around is a pilot program with Doolen Middle School to help students who are at risk of suspension or have been suspended to help them maintain their homework, develop positive relationships and stay in school.  If you are interested in volunteering and helping at risk students with homework, reading or just a listening ear, EEF needs you!

Registration is required.  Training will be held at the Norton Boys & Girls Club next to Doolen Middle School, and participants will be invited to meet staff and tour the school after each training session.

Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - New Glass Art Exhibit

Internationally acclaimed glass artist Michael Joplin is exhibiting his first new collection of glass art in nine years. He is joined by three other glass artsits, Paul Anders-Stout, Dave Klein and Bronwen Heilman. All of the artists, including Joplin, are instructors at the Sonoran Glass Art Academy and are considered among the top glass artists in the U.S.today. Show runs through Jan. 10. A holiday exhibition showcasing works by local and national artists who have been invited to interpret the theme “Ornament” in their work. A holiday display of beautiful creches, or nativities, created by traditional artists from Mexico and Peru. This exhibition is on view in the Palice Pavilion of Latin American Art located in the historic Stevens/Duffield House through March 22. Please note: The 2008 traditional El Nacimiento created by Maria Luisa Tena will not be presented due to renovation work in La Casa Cordova. Thursday, 08 January, 2009 - 'Black & White: A Group Show' Exhibit

Works in black and white focus the attention on form and line, mood and meaning, rather than color. The artists in this group show each use the palette of black and white for particular reasons. Tim Diggles evokes the past – a pre-color television world – in his monotone ceramic constructions. Carson Fox trades in her signature candy-colors to create a floral bouquet of black cast resin, signifying the tension between life and death, and somberness and play-time. Ralph Iwamoto’s black and white designs are a minimalist’s exploration of positive and negative space. And Mark Pomilio, who explores spatial relationships, uses a basic palette of charcoal lines to convey the science behind his work. Show runs Dec. 6-31. Director John Mussack and the da Vinci Players present a rendition of this Pulitzer Prize-nominated play by A. R. Gurney. The dramedy is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembles daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The action plays out over a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. The run continues Friday-Sunday through January. 18.
