Recreation Notes: Schreiber tops cycling series

Nick Schreiber was the runaway men's Category 1-2 winner in the final standings of this summer's road bicycle Tucson Criterium.

Schreiber, 24, finished with 22 points in winning two of the three events outright and tying Flag Velo teammate Denny Vaughan (12 final points) in the third race event at Oro Valley's Casas Adobes Baptist Church. Rob Alvarez of Landis/Trek/VW (10) was third.

Nancy Ellis of Desert Foxes and Gina Voci of Phoenix and the DeFeet team of North Carolina tied for first in the women's Category 1-2, each with 16 points.

Other men's division winners were Category 3, William Kirk Robinson, Landis (20); Category 4, Andrew Scott, Flag Velo (12); Category 5, Brian Ten Eyck, Team Aggress, and Seth Van Norman, unattached (14); Masters 35+, Denny Vaughan, Flag Velo (16); Masters 45+, David Beirne, Lanids (22); Masters 55+, Norm Kibble, RPM (16); and Masters 65+, Leroy Bloom, Thunder Mountain (22).

Other women's division winners were: Category 3, Maryclaire Mabry, FWRT (16); Category 4, Christina Carbone, Team Rhino (18); Masters 35+, Marlene Zuhl, Mountain Velo (22); and Masters 50+, Sharon Scofield, Southwest Hand (24).

Labor Day begins season

The Southern Arizona Roadrunners 2005-2006 season begins with the traditional Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run on Sept. 5 at Saguaro National Park Rincon Mountain District (East).

The event, beginning at 6:30 a.m., will be run for the 36th straight year on the challenging and hilly eight-mile paved park course. Six other Roadrunners events will be held this year. For information call 326-9383 or access Web site www.azroadrunners.org. The 2005 schedule:

Jim Click's Run 'n' Roll: 7 a.m., Sept. 25. Includes wheelchair competition and an eight-kilometer race on a flat University of Arizona course. This benefit for UA's Disability Resources Adaptive Athletics program is an early fall festival with food, massages, entertainment and health checks.

Jim's Mystery Run: Everything's a mystery about Jim Irish's SAR fun outing - time, date, course. Be prepared.

Get Moving Tucson 10-Miler: 7 a.m., Oct. 29. The traditional 10-miler shifts courses for this year from the Northeast Side to a run from St. Joseph's Hospital on the East Side to the West Side's St. Mary's Hospital. It's the culminating event of Carondelet's 125th Anniversary "Get Moving Tucson" Health and Wellness Festival. Also included is a 5-mile fitness walk and 1-mile family stroll.

Thanksgiving Cross Country Classic: 8 a.m., Nov. 25. High School and college vacationing athletes love this European-style 5K run around Reid Park.

The Winterhaven Run Through the Lights: 6 p.m. Dec. 19. The annual noncompetitive jaunt in the wonderland of Christmas lights. Bring holiday cheer and attire.

Training runs set

The Southern Arizona Roadrunners' Steve Felde will host two more training runs for the annual Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run. Sessions, open to all runners and walkers, will be at 5:30 a.m. Aug. 6 and Aug. 27 at Saguaro National Park Rincon Mountain District. Cost is $5 per person park entry fee. Runners/walkers are advised by SAR to bring water or other fluids to carry. For information call Felde at 885-5325 (evenings).
