There is a particular style to mariachi music and how it is played/performed, and this style means that the musicians always play standing up. Mariachis never sit down to play. They take breaks and they sit down during breaks but when they're going to play again, they always stand. They also stand in a particular position, they stand with their feet apart, toes pointing out. It's a very tall, very strong stance, and they're usually arranged in an arc with the violins on the left (as one is facing them), and then on the far right would be the guitars and in the center the trumpets, the guitarrón and the vihuela, and if there's a harp, it's also toward the center. Generally, that's the arrangement.
The music is very passionate and the performers (both mariachis and singers) are quite expressive. Passion! Here is photograph of a working mariachi in my hometown. In fact, that's my jeep right behind them. They were following us from the Mass out into the country where we were having the party for my grandfather's 100th birthday. and The mariachi played while walking, they played the entire time. This event started about two in the afternoon and went well into the night. You saw some earlier photographs where some of the local town people were were singing with the mariachi. This is very common. But by the end of the evening EVERYBODY sings with mariachis, including some of us that can't sing. If you can't recognize me without a beard, that's me.
