TEMPE - As James Harden continued to put up absurd scoring numbers, a question might have formed in the minds of Arizona State's faithful.
What happens if that guy ever gets in foul trouble?
After Thursday night's 81-60 victory over Jackson State at Wells Fargo Arena, an answer might have presented itself, even against inferior competition.
Harden, the nation's fourth-leading scorer at 27 points per game, picked up his fourth foul with 15:31 left in the second half. ASU led 52-39 at the time.
When he returned nearly 10 minutes later, the No. 19 Sun Devils led by 21.
Yawn.
"That was a real silver lining," ASU coach Herb Sendek said. "That was a real positive for us, not that we want to be in that position where we have to have him on the bench in foul trouble."
As Harden sat between assistant coaches Scott Pera and Dedrique Taylor, he watched six teammates score. Rihards Kuksiks hit two 3-pointers. Jeff Pendergraph dunked. Eric Boateng scored on a nice post move.
But more than the scoring was the effort. Three Sun Devils dived on the floor after a loose ball, and two risked floor burns chasing another.
The Sun Devils (6-1) had lost their preseason All-American, and hardly anyone noticed.
Harden collected 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists in 25 minutes. He made 4 of 5 from 3-point range, continuing his hot shooting. After starting the season 2 of 14 from such distance, Harden has made 14 of his past 18.
Texas tops UCLA
AUSTIN, Texas - A.J. Abrams' shooting touch and rock-solid team defense keep getting it done for Texas.
Abrams matched his career high with 31 points, including the last six of the game for the Longhorns, sending No. 8 Texas to a rugged 68-64 victory over No. 12 UCLA on Thursday night.
Abrams broke a tie at 62 with a 3-pointer with 2:53 to play, then made two free throws a minute later to push Texas' lead back to three. After the Bruins' Josh Shipp missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 15 seconds left, Shipp fouled Abrams who made one of his two free throws for the final point.
"Our guys made plays at the end," Texas coach Rick Barnes said. "When we get settled into our defense, we're a pretty hard team to score against. We talked about going out there to scrap."
The Longhorns (6-1) held UCLA (4-2) scoreless after Alfred Aboya's basket with 2:28 left pulled the Bruins within 65-64.
Darren Collison scored 22 points and Shipp added 15 to lead the Bruins.
No. 2 Connecticut 68, Buffalo 64: At Amherst, N.Y., Hasheem Thabeet had 21 points and 18 rebounds, Jeff Adrien added 18 points for Connecticut (8-0).
No. 6 Oklahoma 73, Southern Cal 72: At Norman, Okla., Blake Griffin scored 11 of his 25 points after getting hit with an elbow in the second half, and Oklahoma (7-0) staved off a rally by Southern California.
No. 17 Villanova 93, Houston Baptist 57: At Villanova, Pa., Scottie Reynolds scored a season-high 23 points and had six assists for Villanova (8-0).
Washington 83, Oklahoma State 65: At Seattle, freshman Isaiah Thomas scored 18 points as Washington (4-3) won.
