With tuition costs soaring and state support for the University of Arizona sagging, good news arrived this week from Cox Communications.
Cox has become the first member of the Arizona Assurance scholarship program's Corporate Circle by donating $100,000.
Arizona Assurance covers all college costs for in-state students from families with an adjusted gross income of $42,400 or less per year.
The money goes into an endowment invested by the UA Foundation to develop a continuous income stream for the program, which funds scholars for four years as long as the students maintain a C grade-point average.
College is increasingly important for young people interested in many professions, so UA must help students who cannot afford tuition. Cox has given that effort a badly needed boost.
And, speaking of which, if you thought you only signed up for high-speed Internet, read your Cox bills VERY carefully. They put me on some sort of bundled plan that included cable TV, which I can guarantee that I did NOT request. Reason: I don't own a TV. Never have, in fact.
After making a complaint to Cox and to the Arizona AG's office, Cox stopped charging me for the unneeded cable TV service.
