A Texas woman is being held at Pima County Jail on $1 million bail, accused of killing a woman here on Oct. 8, 2006, a Tucson police captain said.
Detective Capt. William Richards said Michelle Denise Sprang, 41, of Houston, was arrested by cold case detectives on a first-degree murder charged in the killing of Addie Mae Lee, 49.
Sprang was booked into jail Monday, Richards said.
A maid going in to clean a room at the Oasis Motel, 1701 N. Oracle Road, found blood in the room, Richards said.
Motel staffers called police and officers found Lee's body, Sgt. Mark Robinson, a police spokesman, said shortly after the killing.
Richards said the homicide detective originally assigned to the case retired, the case went cold and was handed over to the department's cold case squad.
Sprang was questioned early on in the case, Richards said, but was not arrested.
Forensic evidence conflicted with what Sprang originally told detectives, Richards said. He would not elaborate on the alleged inconsistencies between evidence in the investigation and Sprang's statement.
Richards did not say what motive is suspected.
Sprang was arrested April 7 in Houston and held there for extradition proceedings, police said. She was brought back to Tucson on Monday, Officer Charles Rydzak said.
