Movie-related events in the Old Pueblo

At the Fox Theatre

The Summer Movie Series at the Fox Theatre, 17 W. Congress St., includes:

Sept. 5: Did someone say "toga party?" John Belushi and the gang drink their way through college in "Animal House."

Sept. 6: Dustin Hoffman learns about life from the original cougar, Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson in "The Graduate."

Sept. 12: "Footloose" features Kevin Bacon shaking his thing in skin-tight jeans and getting the town's Bible-thumpers in a tizzy.

Sept. 13: Maybe the frayed-sweatshirt-off-the-shoulder look will come back after another screening of "Flashdance." We can hope, can't we?

Sept. 19: "The Gods Must Be Crazy," and so are we about this charming comedy focusing on a Bushman and an empty Coke bottle.

All movies begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $8 general, $6 for students and seniors.

At Cinema La Placita

Enjoy films under the stars Thursdays at Cinema La Placita, 260 S. Church Ave. Admission is free for the sunset screenings (around 7:30 p.m.), but a $3-to-$5 donation at the popcorn table keeps the films rolling through the end of October. Here's what's coming up:

Thursday: Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones and Rod Steiger star in the film version of the Broadway musical "Oklahoma" that is part of the Shot in Tucson series.

Sept. 4: "Harvey" (1950). Starring James Stewart and directed by Henry Koster.

Sept. 11: "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953). Starring Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell and James Coburn and directed by Howard Hawks.

Sept. 18: "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955). Starring James Dean, Natalie Woods and Sal Mineo and directed by Nicholas Ray.

Sept. 25: "Tootsie" (1982). Starring Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Sidney Pollack, Teri Gar and Bill Murray and directed by Sidney Pollack.

At the Loft Cinema

This week's events at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.

Friday: "Encounters at the End of the World" is Werner Herzog's mad encounter with the personnel assigned to the National Science Foundation and support crew who stay year-round at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Herzog loves to point out how the people who choose this life are not "ordinary people." Various times; regular admission.

Friday: "The Wackness" brings Mary-Kate Olsen to the big screen, along with Ben Kingsley and Famke Janssen. The love story is set in 1994, worlds away from now. Before the attack on America we call 9//11. Who knew those years would ever seem nostalgic? Various times; regular prices.

Friday: "The Magnificent Seven" rides again, pulling their talents together to fight for the rights of everyone to enjoy the American Dream. This film continues the Loft's cinema program to properly celebrate the 90th anniversary of United Artists studio in Hollywood. One screening daily, $5.

Friday and Saturday: "Rushmore," the movie breakthrough for director Wes Anderson, holds up well as an innovative look at the clash of preppy life and eternal love. 10 p.m.; $5.

Monday: "The Last American Virgin" makes the leap to cult status for its sweet innocence, lack of cynical attitude and ample teen nudity. Oh yes, and that Blondie-driven soundtrack. Return to the overheated days of yesteryear, if you dare. 8 p.m.; $2.
