Gene Chewning has had all sorts of jobs. He's been a security worker, a teacher, a ranch hand and a minister.

And now he wants to be a Republican member of Congress representing District 7 in the seat currently held by Democratic Rep. Raúl Grijalva.

Chewning says he's tired of complaining about government and wants to do something about it.

He's an earnest man and embraces many basic Republican principles. Chewning wants oil drilling allowed offshore and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

He favors a wall along the border with Mexico but also says the United States needs a guest worker program to bring people into the country legally to fill jobs that otherwise would go unfilled.

Chewning also wants federal taxes cut, though he is hazy about which taxes he would reduce.

Chewning is a Vietnam veteran whose son is a veteran of the Iraq war. He supports setting a deadline for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, but not publicizing the date, fearing it would embolden terrorists.

Opposing Chewning is Joseph Sweeney, a perennial candidate who has run more than a dozen times. He has nothing worthwhile to say about anything.

Chewning is a prototypical Republican who has thought through the issues.

The Tucson Citizen endorses Gene Chewning in the Republican primary for the U.S. House in District 7.

Hmm. Does Mr. Chewning understand the intricacies of the "genital drive?"
