Good fortune

Tucson is a lucky place.

Each year, we ask our 40 Under 40 winners where they are from and why they chose Tucson as their home. While we've had our share of Tucson natives, the majority of winners, this year and in the past, are transplants.

They have come to Tucson for school or a job opportunity and have come to love the place so much, they decided to stay. Many of them are from the Midwest, citing the weather as big draw (Go figure). We even have some Phoenix transplants! The culture, people and food are all given as reasons to love Tucson.

"I really don't feel like I chose Tucson. I feel like it chose me," says Stephen Portell, an attorney with Quarles & Brady who is originally from Detroit.

But whether they chose Tucson, or Tucson chose them - these 40 men and women aren't content to sit back and simply enjoy what the city has to offer. They work to make sure it remains a place they want to live and raise families, a place that attracts more young people to do the same.

"This city is rich with diversity and potential and has so much to offer," says Claudia Jasso-Stevens, a Texas native who came to Tucson for professional reasons. "I believe that people my age have an obligation to leadership. As emerging leaders, we need to ensure that this community thrives and prospers in the future."

So many young outstanding professionals have chosen to plant roots here, to improve their lives and lives throughout the city - even the world - through their community service.

As I said before, Tucson is a lucky place.
